When back to work is an improved state...

Had the most cheerful Monday morning start of work I have had in a while.... Last week's vacation just wasn't in any way, shape, or form vaction-like. Being really sick for most of it didn't help. The car accident Saturday really didn't help. At least no one was hurt. Still, not making the start of Summer party because a 16 or 17 year old rear ended the zip car I was driving to the party made me feel the whole 12 days were better forgotten. Being back at work meant a sense of both control and normalcy. And needing to dig out from a week and a half's absence means I will be happily busy for the forseeable future.

Anyone out there in my friends' worlds looking for a place to live? Our house in Somerville is looking for a new tenant. Details for the curious or the interested can be provided, I just don't have the time at work right now to write more than this brief post.

2 large cups of iced coffee, a short brisk walk, and a 10minute power nap today, and I still can't wake up. What's next?

Sleep!

You know you must have been tired when....

You fall asleep over a good book at just after 6pm on a weeknight, only wake up at 9pm because the phone rings, and after being up for less than 3 hours, fall back to sleep for another 7 and a half hours.

On the plus side, I feel more awake and alive this morning than I have in ages, even without any caffeine in my system.

I saw this article in [info]agaran's journal. Reading this made the sun outside and the fresh spring breezes feel not so bright and not so fresh. It definitely feels like something worth thinking about.

Its just after 8:30 in the morning, and I have been at work for close to an hour and a half. Whee... I forget that I used to *do* mornings like this and enjoy them. (I needed to be making international phone calls to places like India this morning, thus the early start) But, wow, mornings are good. I'm sleepy, but productive sleepy, not *end of the day and I can't think anymore, but there is still more to get done* sleepy

A number of random life snippets

I'm leaving for San Mateo California this afternoon, for a week, for my first ever business trip... I guess this means I really am in the real world(tm) with a real job (tm).

I think I am going to set a personal record this year... I am currently scheduled to attend 3 Seders and 7 church services during Holy Week (April 1-April 8). And this is in spite of not going to the Easter Vigil I am 50% of the planning crew for.

I am sort of back to Tech Squares - I made two weeks in a row, but now will have missed two weeks in row...

I still intend to finish organizing Mah-jongg nights, but life keeps getting in my way.

I have now been out of academia for an entire year.

Peter Mayer concert this weekend was fabulous.... I wish I could play guitar like that, but I don't want it nearly enough to give up other parts of my life and dedicate practice time to it... grin

Stealing some of this from [info]randysmith because I am being to lazy to start from scratch on this post...

In case folks haven't heard: There's going to be a wonderful singer-songwriter performing at the Arlington UU church this Saturday. He's got both funny songs, and very spiritual songs, in a way that celebrates the joy present in life when you actually pay attention to it. You can get some feel for his music if you go to http://petermayer.net/music; you can play the beginnings of his songs there directly. "The Birthday Party", "God is a River", and "Blue Boat Home" are among my favorites of his spiritual side, but he has a great humorous side as well. I have not seen him perform live yet myself, but have heard from people that have that he is incredible live.

This concert is being produced by [info]psongster who just liked his music enough to want to share him with everyone s/he knows. You can get tickets before the concert for $12; (I have some if you want to contact me); they're $15 at the door. You can also buy them at either The Book Rack or Wood & Strings in Arlington Center (13 Medford Street or 439 Mass Ave, respectively). It's at the First Parish UU Church in Arlington @ 7:30pm on Saturday 3/10; that's at the intersection of Rt. 60 and Mass Ave in Arlington (630 Massachusetts Avenue). Parking shouldn't be too hard to find; there's a municipal lot across Mass Ave from the church, and another bigger one catty-cornered from the church behind the set of shops on that side of Mass Ave. Hope to see you there!

Geekery Question

Reflection
So,
I could use a little help from people geekier than I, or at least who have poked their noses into a different area of geekery than I have. I want to learn a little bit about Database Schema designs, specifically to help me understand how and why commercial databases are put together the way they are. I don't want something that is going to assume I know a lot already, but probably a little more technical than "databases for dummies". Does anyone either 1) know stuff about how databases work and want to teach me a little bit about them or 2) have a favorite book that explains this stuff at the level I was just describing? I can probably promise dinner to whoever succeeds in increasing my database understanding.

The Prodigal Kitty Returns

Rejoice, kill the fatted calf, and feast... the Prodigal Kitty has returned to his home.

In more prosaic terms, Ripley has been found and returned to us. He wandered the neighbor hood for several days but seems none the worse for wear. Last night he was petted and made much over, tonight, unbeknownst to him he is getting a B-A-T-H.... One of our neighbors up the street saw him playing in their backyard and called us. Much relief ensued.

I may be over-reacting but...

Those of you that were at the housewarming last night... what is the latest time that you remember seeing the cat, Ripley, and where was he at the time? We can't seem to find him, and while he may have crawled into a hiding spot, I am worried.

You know you are thirsty when...

You might think you are thirsty when you wake up at 5am from a dream whose sole image was of drinking a tall glass of lemonade. You know you are thirsty when after waking up from such a dream and after drinking two tall glasses of juice you still feel that refilling the ice cube trays and making up a new pitcher of juice is a priority that cannot wait for daybreak.
